Privacy Policy
Effective date: October 13, 2026
Who we are
GasHawk is a community gas-price app for Canada and the United States. It is operated by FMW Inc. (“we”, “us”). This policy explains what personal information the GasHawk mobile app, its servers and this web site collect, why, who receives it, and what you can do about it.
Privacy officer: [email protected]. This person is responsible for our compliance and handles your requests.
We follow the privacy laws that apply where our users live, including Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), Québec’s Law 25, and US state privacy laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA).
We do not sell your personal information, show ads, or track you across other companies’ apps or websites.
What we collect
You can browse, report and confirm prices without an account. An account adds points, badges, the leaderboard, reviews, station suggestions and GasHawk Pro.
| Information | When we collect it | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Install identifier: a random ID created when you install the app. It is not your hardware ID or advertising ID | Sent with every request from the app | To let you report prices without an account, limit abuse, and move those reports to your account if you later sign in on the same phone. Reinstalling the app creates a new one |
| Email address and password (stored only as an Argon2 hash) | When you create an account with email | To sign you in, secure your account and send password reset emails |
| Sign-in identifier from your phone’s platform account, the email address the sign-in service shares (possibly a private relay address) and your name | When you sign in with your iPhone or Android account instead of an email and password | To sign you in. If an account already uses that email, we link the two |
| Display name | When you create an account. When you sign in with your iPhone or Android account, it is the name the sign-in service shares; if none is shared we assign one like “Driver12345” | Shown next to your contributions and on the leaderboard |
| Your device’s position and its accuracy, the area of the map you are viewing, your region (country, province or state) and time-zone offset | Each time you search for stations nearby or in an area | To find stations and current prices near you and show local results (see Your location) |
| Your position | When you report or confirm a price | To check you are within 2 km of the station |
| Your approximate position (rounded to about 1 km) | When you open the forecast | To pick the nearest city with a forecast |
| Route start and end points, and your route preferences | When you plan a route | To find stations along the route |
| Prices you report or confirm, votes on prices, reviews (rating, text, tags), suggested station edits, notes and votes on edits | When you submit them | To provide community prices and station information |
| Points history, level, badges, streaks, a trust score and contribution counts. The points history records which station each contribution was for and when | When you contribute | To run points and the leaderboard, and to weigh how reliable reports are |
| App settings: default fuel, preferred maps app, tank size, list and sort preferences, route preferences | When you change them while signed in | To keep your settings the same on all your phones |
| Favourite stations, price alert targets, and forecast alert settings (city, thresholds, time of day and time zone) | When you star a station or set an alert (alerts are part of GasHawk Pro) | To send you the alerts you asked for |
| A push notification token, platform and language for each phone you are signed in on | When you are signed in and allow notifications | To deliver your alerts |
| Whether you have GasHawk Pro and when the current period ends | When you sign in, and when your subscription changes | To unlock Pro features |
| Crash, error and performance reports | When the app or our servers hit an error, and for a sample of app sessions | To find and fix bugs and slowdowns |
Photos. When you scan a price sign, the photo is read on your phone to fill in the prices and deleted right away. It is never uploaded to us or anyone else.
IP addresses. Our servers use your IP address in memory to limit how many requests one device can make. We do not store it with your account. Our hosting and diagnostics providers may record it in short-lived technical logs.
We do not collect your contacts, photo library or advertising identifier.
How we use it
We use your information only to run GasHawk:
- Show stations, prices and reviews near you, along your route, and in the areas you browse.
- Check that price reports come from someone near the station.
- Award points and badges, and rank the leaderboard.
- Moderate reviews and station edits, and prevent spam and abuse.
- Send the alerts you set up, and emails you ask for, such as password resets.
- Check your Pro subscription.
- Keep your account secure and fix bugs.
We do not use your information for advertising or profiling, and we do not make automated decisions about you with legal or similarly significant effects.
What other users can see
- Your contributions. Your display name appears next to prices you report or confirm (with the station and time), reviews you write, and station edits and notes you suggest.
- The leaderboard. Your display name, points, level and rank. Your contributions and the leaderboard also carry your account’s random ID.
- Reports without an account show a nickname generated from the install identifier, such as “SwankySwan963”. It stays the same for every report from that install.
Other users never see your email address or your location.
Our moderators and administrators can see account details (including email), contributions, trust score and moderation history, to keep the community accurate. Their actions are logged.
Who we share it with
Service providers process data for us under contract, only to provide their service:
| Provider | What it does | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting provider | Runs our servers, database and cache | Everything we store |
| Phone platform services (your phone’s maker and operating system provider) | Sign-in with your phone’s account; maps, place search and route directions; push notification delivery | Sign-in requests; the map area you view; what you type in search; route start and end points; your push token and the alert text |
| Route planning provider | Works out routes on phones that can’t do it themselves | Route start and end points |
| Push notification service | Sends alerts to your phone’s notification service | Your push token and the alert text |
| Subscription management provider | Checks GasHawk Pro subscriptions with the app stores | Your account ID when you are signed in, your purchases and basic device information. The app store takes the payment; we never receive your card or payment details |
| Email delivery provider | Sends account emails, such as password resets | Your email address, display name and the email’s content |
| Crash reporting provider (United States) | App crash, error and performance reports | Error details, device model and OS, app version and your account ID. Names, emails and coordinates are removed |
| Server diagnostics provider | Technical traces of server requests | Request timings and errors. Coordinates and request contents are removed |
Apps you open. If you tap Directions, we open your maps app with the station’s address. That app’s privacy policy then applies.
Legal reasons. We may disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the safety of users or the public. If GasHawk is sold or merged, your information may transfer to the new operator under this policy.
Some providers store or process data outside your province, state or country, including in the United States. It is then subject to the laws of that place.
Your location
GasHawk uses your location only while the app is open. It never tracks you in the background.
- Nearby and area searches. Each search sends us your device’s position and the map area you are viewing. We use them to answer the search and do not store them.
- Reports and confirmations. We check your position is within 2 km of the station. We store the price, not where you were.
- Forecast. Your position is rounded to about 1 km before it leaves your phone, and is only used to pick the nearest city.
- Route planning. On iPhone, the route is worked out on your phone by its built-in maps. On Android, we ask our route planning provider for it. We use the route to find stations along it and do not store it.
- Place search. Searching for a city or address uses your phone’s built-in search.
- No location history. We do not keep a record of your locations, and we remove coordinates from our server logs and error reports.
If you deny location access, GasHawk opens on a default city and you can search anywhere. Reporting a price needs location.
Your choices and rights
- Access and portability. Download a copy of your data in Profile → Settings → Download my data. It includes your profile, settings, stats, badges, prices, votes, reviews, edits, points history, favourites and alerts. Contact us for anything else we hold about you.
- Deletion. Delete your account in Profile → Settings → Delete account. It takes effect right away (see below for what happens to your data).
- Correction. Contact us to correct your email or display name.
- Location and notifications. Turn off location or notifications for GasHawk in your phone’s settings at any time.
- No account. You can use GasHawk without an account. Reports made this way are tied only to the install identifier; delete the app to reset it.
- Withdraw consent or complain. Contact our privacy officer. In Canada, if you are not satisfied, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or, in Québec, the Commission d’accès à l’information.
US residents. Depending on your state, you may have the right to know what personal information we hold, and to access, correct or delete it. You will not be treated differently for using these rights. We do not sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising. To make a request, use the options above or email [email protected].
We answer requests within 30 days.
How long we keep it
| Data | How long |
|---|---|
| Account, contributions, points and settings | While your account exists |
| Sign-in sessions | Expire after 30 days without use |
| Password reset links | Work once and expire after 60 minutes |
| Price and forecast alerts | Until you remove them, your Pro subscription ends, or you delete your account |
| Push tokens | Until you sign out on that phone, uninstall the app, or delete your account |
| Prices you reported | Kept as community price history. When you delete your account they are no longer linked to it, are shown without a name or nickname, and can’t be moved to another account. We keep the random install identifier of the phone they came from, never shown, only so that phone can’t confirm its own reports |
| Reports made without an account | Kept as community price history, tied to the install identifier |
| Error reports | 90 days |
| Backups | Deleted on their normal rotation, within 30 days |
When you delete your account, we delete your profile, email, sign-in methods, sessions, reviews, suggested edits, votes, points, badges, settings, favourites, alerts and push tokens. Records of moderator and administrator actions may keep a note of the account for our security and legal obligations. Our subscription management provider and the app stores keep their own purchase records under their policies.
Security. Passwords are hashed with Argon2, and we store only hashes of sign-in tokens and password reset links. All connections use HTTPS. Access to production data is limited to authorized staff. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify you and the regulator as the law requires.
Children
GasHawk is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We will post changes here with a new effective date. For significant changes, we will notify you in the app before they take effect.
